Welcome to "The Ashlin Project"

Welcome to our blog and we are looking forward to everyone who gets involved with our virtual traveler learning platform. We are so thankful for having one of our alumni (a.k.a. Ashlin) as our first global virtual tour guide and I can't wait to see what this adventure will bring to all that participate.

 Happy Travels,

 Mr. Smith

  1. Here is some backstory: my dad, who used to be in the Navy, finally retired on October 31, 2016, and took on a new job in the United Arab Emirates. He announced the news in January of 2016, and it took us a full year to sell/donate/throw away all of our stuff, clear out everything we own, redo both the backyard and front yard, paint the house, and make everything look nice for the next people who will live in our house on top of keeping up with school work and friends. It was a lot of work! In August, my dad went to Abu Dhabi for three months for his job to establish the house, buy everything, and get things settled before we moved on December 7 with nothing but ten suitcases and the clothes on our backs.
However, after being in Abu Dhabi for about three months now, I have grown to really love it here. I have so many wonderful friends at school, wonderful teachers, and only a minimal amount of homework every night, haha.
No matter where you go, everybody speaks English, mostly with accents, and it’s great how you can meet so many different people from around the world. In school, I have friends from Ireland, the United Kingdom, Cyprus, Greece, America, Sweden, Australia, Spain, Germany, Japan, India, China, Korea, Thailand, Mexico, Vietnam, Egypt, Canada, you name it! The list is endless! Just at school alone, there are different flags for every nationality of the students that are there - so far we have 94! Everybody is so sweet and interesting. They all have their backstories and opinions on things, which makes life so much more enjoyable because you get to learn new stuff everyday.
Abu Dhabi itself is gorgeous, considering it’s still a new country. Everything looks so new and high-tech, and the buildings are shaped in interesting ways (there’s a building near me that’s shaped like a flat pancake standing up!).
However, it does get really hot here. It’s only March, but already the temperature reaches 86 degrees fahrenheit! So my siblings and I went swimming today in our backyard pool, haha. Abu Dhabi is exactly 12 hours ahead of Chula Vista, and school is from Sunday-Thursday. Everybody uses the metric system (which is still difficult for me to understand fully), and every Arabic sign has English underneath so foreigners don’t have any problems getting around.
And I think that’s it for now! If I forgot to mention anything/if you’re curious about anything, please don’t hesitate to ask! I’ll be happy to reply as soon as I can. Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy what I have to say!
